Before Kitty Hawk? The Overlooked Story of Charles Frederick Page, the Black Inventor Who Dreamed of Conquering the Sky

By the time most Americans learn the history of flight, the story has usually been reduced to a few familiar images.
Two brothers.
A sandy beach.
A wooden machine.
A cold December day in 1903.
And Kitty Hawk.
The Wright brothers—Orville and Wilbur—rightfully occupy an enormous place in the history of aviation. Their December 17, 1903, flights in North Carolina are widely recognized as the first sustained, controlled flights of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft.
